Middle Grade Movie Recommendation

Jan 26, 2012

Vada Sultenfuss is obsessed with death. Her mother is dead, and her father runs a funeral parlor. She is also in love with her English teacher, and joins a poetry class over the summer just to impress him. Thomas J., her best friend, is "allergic to everything", and sticks with Vada despite her hangups. When Vada's father hires Shelly, a makeup expert, in his funeral parlor, and begins to fall in love with her, Vada is outraged and does everything in her power to split them up.

This isn't a review, but I remember watching this movie as a kid and even now it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. It's a great movie about love, friendship, family, and dealing with death. I think it's one of those movies that everyone should see at least once. When I think about favorite childhood movies it's definitely at the top of my list. When I think about the kind of middle grade stories I aspire to write I think about My Girl. It's a coming-of-age movie that will make you laugh and cry. It's truly inspiring.

Have you seen My Girl? If you have, what did you think about it?
